Why did I start writing? School. It was an assignment. I had to write, but then my teacher in 5thgrade gave the class a writing assignment about a meal with family. Most of the class wrote about holiday gatherings like Thanksgiving or Christmas. The stories described large family gatherings with cousins and aunts and uncles, crowded houses, multiple tables, and a lot of turkey. My story wasn’t like that, at all.
I am the youngest of three. My sister is 14 years older than I am, and my brother is 12 years older. When my sister would invite me to go shopping with her at Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw, Michigan, we would call my brother, who lived in the area, to meet us for lunch at La Senorita restaurant.
I described the library room where we were always seated, the food, the laughter in such detail that when I read the story again, I felt like I was there. My teacher must have felt that way, too. I got an A on the assignment and really started to enjoy writing.
It is the details. The colorful adjectives. The words that make the senses come to life.

One morning, while having a cup of coffee, my friend wandered out to her garden to check her tomato plants. As the story goes, she strolled to the end of the garden closest to the wooded area and there was a ginormous porcupine! Startled but trying not to startle it, she gingerly backed away from the massive pokey visitor.
As she told me the story, I thought…he sounds like a Joe, maybe he just wanted to have coffee with her. Maybe he wanted to give her an update on the tomato plants. He might be a tomato plant aficionado. I could see the story start to unfold….
The mind works in mysterious ways. I say, let it.
